Dan Gurney in the Gurney-Weslake 3 litre V12 F1 Eagle at 1967 Spa. The car’s chassis was made of titanium, a first in F1. Dan Gurney raced a car of his own construction into the Winners Circle at the 1967 Belgium GP at Spa-Francochamp. This has never been done before or since by another American driver in the 100 year history of F1. (Only Bruce McLaren and Jack Brabham have won F1 races in their own cars) After winning the 1967 24 hr race at LeMans with teammate A.J. Foyt in the Ford GT Mk IV, Dan started spraying champagne into the crowd. This had never been done before. From this point on Champions around the world have followed in his footsteps, spraying their champagne in celebration! 1967 was a pretty good year for Dan Gurney!!!

Nigel Mansell in the Ferrari 640 at 1989 Brazil GP. The Ferrari 640 was the first of the naturally aspirated Ferraris after the end of the first F1 turbo era, it was powered by a 3.5 liter 65º V12 called the Ferrari Tipo 035/5. This engine produced up to 660 bhp at 13,000 rpm. Ferrari”s 640 Formula 1 car was introduced for the 1989 season, it was the first Ferrari with a semi-automatic gearbox and despite reliability issues in testing, Mansell would go on to claim victory in the first race of the 1989 season at the Brazil GP and later at the Hungarian GP.

Road & Track 1963 cover photo of John Surtees in the Ferrari F1 at Monaco GP. This is the issue that started my passion for drawing cars, particularly Ferrari’s!!!!

Wine Label for “Dash Two”

I thought I show the progression of a painting from start to finish. I start out with photos of the cars, drivers and landscapes for references. I grid the photos and canvas to transfer the image as accurately as possible. Start with the background moving forward to the subject of focus. I’m left handed, so I also work mostly from right to left with my hand on a golf club shaft resting on the top of the canvas frame to keep my hand out of the wet paint. I originally did the wheels static and loved the way they turned out. But with the rain spraying of the tires, the wheels didn’t convey the look of speed. So I gave them the blur of spinning wheels. Not sure I don’t like the static look better! This painting took a little longer than usual, about 120 hrs.
